“write a poem about children playing with their kites in Gaza, Palestine”
Over Gaza’s fractured rooftops, bold against the blue,
Children run with restless joy, as wind and hope renew.
Kites—tattered tissue, brilliant bright—
Stitched from scraps, a patchwork flight,
Ribbons trailing, sighing high,
Color splashed upon the sky.
Their laughter rises, light and fleet,
Over tangled wires and sunburnt street,
To launch each fragile paper dream
Above the world’s harsh thunder scheme.
Barefoot arcs across the sand,
Gripping spools in steady hand,
Eyes lifted from dust below—
They race where only kites can go.
Red and gold and precious green,
Wings of freedom, slim and lean,
Dipping, soaring, bold and young,
Songs for peace unsung, unsung.
Down below, the world debates
Walls and borders, heavy gates,
But up above, where breezes play,
Children wage a different day.
For in each kite’s ascending arc,
Glints a prayer against the dark,
A fleeting faith, a thread of grace
Dancing in contested space.
Gaza’s hope, on linen strung,
Flutters bright where dreams are hung,
A thousand colors, stitched with care—
Childhood flying, everywhere.
