“Love letter to coffee”
Ode to Coffee
Dearest friend of bleary dawn,
Ink-dark joy the night withdraws,
Warmth that bends the morning yawn
To song, and summons gentle awe.
You wait in cups with curls of steam,
Whispering hope across the rim—
Invincible, sepia cream,
A comfort when my light is dim.
You wake the city’s tangled dream
Beneath your blanket, thick and deep;
On sidewalks, in cool subway seams,
Your scent rouses the streets from sleep.
You swirl through talk at kitchen tables,
Engraved in laughter, hush, and sighs;
You seep in stories, fresh as fables,
And linger sweetly in goodbyes.
Espresso—quick and sharp as wit,
Pretending in a tiny cup
To hold the universe in it,
A dark delight with edges up.
Or milky, spun with golden foam,
Latte, as soft as whispered thanks,
You make each ordinary home
A palace in the morning ranks.
I love your stubborn, bitter spark,
Your velvet earth in fragile ware,
You turn the slow and shrouded dark
To brisk and polished morning air.
No poem could quite capture how
Your kiss revives, remakes, restores;
So with each dawn, I seal this vow—
Dearest coffee: yours, evermore.
