“humorous short free verse poem using feathered felons”

In the breakfast nook,
three feathered felons—
grifting grackles,
crow-cocky,
and the sly, guiltless sparrow,
plot their morning heist.

Grackles swagger,
midnight suits slick,
eyeing the day-old bagels
with criminal intent.
The sparrow, all fluff and innocence,
keeps lookout on the fence,
cheeps code words:
"Clear! Cheddar! Cat!"

They descend,
a hitch of wings and
a fluster of crumbs,
peck, peck,
swipe,
and sprint for the hydrangea hedge—
pilfered breakfast clamped
in beak and claw.

You find me laughing on the porch,
watching justice
(for seed thieves)
go unserved—
accomplice to larceny,
my coffee trembling
with delight.
