“daydreaming on a beach in Mauritius”

Beyond the swirl of turquoise seaward glance,
I laze where white sands cradle every thought—
Mauritian noon spills gold across my stance,
And time, like foamy tide, drifts soft and caught.

Palm fronds hush secrets in a salted breeze,
A latticework of sun dapples my skin;
Somewhere, laughter skips above the seas—
The hulls of pirogues glide, bright dreams within.

I close my eyes: a sugar cane perfume
Wraps lullabies around my quiet heart,
Volcanic peaks arise through morning’s gloom,
Their emerald skirts a painter’s tangled art.

In reverie, the world is sweet and slow—
A mango’s flesh, a rainbow bunched with shells—
The distant calls of fishermen I know
Are stitched to waves by memory’s gentle spells.

Daydreams wander, buoyed on wind and brine,
To feasts of rougaille by a twilight fire,
To Sega drums that make the night entwine
With barefoot joy, and lanterns climbing higher.

O, let me drift beneath these endless skies,
Where sand and song and sun and hope entwine—
On Mauritius’ beach, my spirit flies,
Awash in dream, at peace by grand design.
