“Cats”
In moonlit rooms and sunlit nooks,
Where velvet shadows stretch and curl,
A silent prince in silvered looks
Commands the hearts of boy and girl.
A thimble paw on table’s edge—
A whiskered face, intent, aloof—
A leap, a bound, a tail to pledge
Their silent treaty on the roof.
Their purr resounds like distant drums,
A comfort deep as winter fire;
In tangled heaps of sleep, one comes
To nestle close, their sole desire.
Eyes of emerald, topaz, gold—
Soft lamps that read the world’s intent;
With ancient knowledge secretly told,
And wisdom knowing where they went.
They are the monarchs of the house—
The queens, the jesters, and the knights—
Each bright parade of fur and mouse
Adorns the quiet, velvet nights.
So raise a cup for cats today,
For mischief, grace, and gentle paws;
They chase the noisome cares away—
And reign within our hearts, because.
