“A Dr. Seuss poem about giant aliens who look like green onions”
On the edge of a galaxy, spun like a top,
Stood the blue-laced planet of Hoppel-De-Hop.
The sky was all swizzle, the air smelled of pie,
When out of the Starlight came something—oh my!
They wobbled and boinged in a rickety ship,
With springs on the bottom and sauce for a grip.
The hatch opened wide with a garlicky breeze—
Out tumbled green giants that bent at the knees!
Their heads were round bulbs, with a gentle green sheen,
Their hair shot up high, like a wild scallion queen!
With rings all a-jingling down long, leafy arms—
They jiggled and laughed and unleashed all their charms.
"We’re the Alliumans from the planet O’Chive!
We’ve come to say hi and see who’s alive!
We dance and we topple, we tickle the moon,
We juggle the raindrops and sing silly tunes!"
The folks of Hoppel-De were nervous at first—
Green onions, so giant! Would their bubbles all burst?
But the Alliumans, in one grand sprouty pile,
Began telling jokes in their onion-y style.
"Why did we cross space, from so far away?
To find friendly faces and maybe to play!
And if you should wonder or if you should doubt—
We promise our breath will not knock you out!"
Soon everyone’s houses were circled with green—
A parade of huge onions, the best ever seen!
They danced on the rooftops, they bounced in the parks,
They spelled out "HELLO" in the stars, leaving marks.
So if on a clear night you spot, with a swoon,
A ship in your sky shaped exactly like a spoon,
Remember the onions who came from afar—
Who taught you to laugh and to wish on a star!
